The emergence of mobile phones has greatly facilitated people's communication, and smartphones have changed human socialisation, entertainment, payment and even all aspects. As the heart and power of mobile phones, are all mobile phone batteries now lithium polymer batteries? What is the difference between the battery of an iPhone and an Android phone?

Apple batteries and the vast majority of Android phone batteries on the market are lithium polymer batteries

In the early days, mobile phones used nickel-chromium batteries, which were small in capacity and large in size, not only bulky but also had a serious memory effect, and were soon replaced by nickel-metal hydride batteries, until the emergence of lithium-ion batteries, mobile phone batteries really returned to the unified situation.

Today, Apple and the vast majority of Android phone batteries on the market use more advanced lithium polymer battery solutions. This type of battery has the advantages of safety and flexibility. The electrolyte of a lithium polymer battery is solid or gelatinous, unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, which is prone to leakage or fire, so the probability of explosion is almost zero. In addition, polymer batteries can be pinched into various shapes according to the design needs of mobile phones, which makes mobile phone designs more flexible and diverse.

Lithium-ion batteries consist of two positive and negative electrodes, separated by a liquid chemical electrolyte such as ethylene carbonate or diethyl carbonate. The chemical composition of this type of battery limits its shape to be mostly rectangular. The capacity of lithium-ion batteries decreases with charge cycles and discharges even when not in use, which is not ideal. To make matters worse, chemical electrolytes can become unstable at extreme temperatures or if punctured, with a chance of causing "thermal runaway" and fire.

Lithium polymer batteries similarly use positive and negative electrodes, but instead of liquids, they use a dry, solid, porous chemical, or gelatinous electrolyte. As a result, polymer batteries can offer thinner, more flexible, and stronger designs, with a lower chance of electrolyte leakage leading to thermal runaway. In short, lithium polymer batteries are safer.

There are significant differences between Apple mobile phone batteries and Android mobile phone batteries in terms of capacity, technology, and management system

Battery capacity

iPhone battery capacity : The battery capacity of Apple phones is relatively small, usually between 3000mAh and 4000mAh. For example, the iPhone 15 has a battery capacity of 3240mAh, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a battery capacity of 4852mAh.

Android phone battery capacity: The battery capacity of Android phones is generally high, usually above 5000mAh, and even some models reach 6000mAh. For example, some high-end Android phones like the Xiaomi 13 have a 5000mAh battery, while the Huawei Mate 50 Pro has a 4700mAh battery.

Battery technology and management systems

Apple mobile phone battery technology: Apple focuses on improving battery density and optimising the internal structure in battery technology. For example, the iPhone 15 uses a new silicon carbon anode battery, which increases the battery density and allows the battery capacity to be increased while maintaining the phone's thin and light design. In addition, Apple's iOS system excels in power consumption control and is able to effectively extend battery life.

Android phone battery technology: Android phones have also made progress in battery technology, but overall they still rely on high-capacity batteries to ensure battery life. Android phones usually use a larger battery capacity to compensate for the lack of technology.

User experience

Apple mobile phone user experience: Due to the optimisation of the iOS system and efficient hardware management, the Apple mobile phone is not inferior to the high-capacity Android phone in terms of battery life. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max may have more battery life than some 5000mAh Android flagships.

Android phone user experience: Although some Android phones have a larger battery capacity, the user experience may not be as good as that of Apple phones due to differences in system optimisation and hardware management. The large-capacity battery has alleviated the range anxiety to a certain extent, but the overall experience still needs to be improved.

To sum up, there are significant differences between Apple phones and Android phones in terms of battery capacity, technology, and user experience. Apple phones extend battery life by optimising the internal structure and increasing battery density, while Android phones rely on large capacity batteries to ensure battery life.

We believe that with the application of more advantageous solid-state battery solutions in the future, the two lineups of Apple mobile phones and Android mobile phones will go hand in hand, and users will no longer have much anxiety about battery life.
